Name:   Henry Amelia

Description:   ~ 2-3 yrs old ~ 34 lbs ~ NOW ADOPTED ~

Henry is a sweet calm beagle mix. He is on the large size of the beagle spectrum at 34 pounds, which for his frame is slightly underweight. He will need to fill out a little once in a good loving home that takes care of him. He was on his own in rural Virginia and apparently missed quite a few meals until being picked up as a stray. He came in to rescue in February 2013 and has been settling in ever since. He is young, energetic and gets along with other dogs. He is playful, but he is very aggressive in his playing style and this can put other dogs off. I would not recommend taking Henry to a dog park for this reason. He is very fond of people and loves the attention and interaction on a daily basis. In fact, he likes people so much that he suffers from a very mild case of separation anxiety. He does not like to be left behind, and tells you so if the door is shut in his face, but usually quiets down quickly. Henry is a little on the timid side as many rescue dogs are. He has been through quite a lot in the past few weeks as he passed through the shelter, transport, kenneling at the first stop, vetting, transport and finally arriving at his new “home” where 7 other dogs reside. That is a lot for a baby to handle in two weeks. He may become less timid after he knows that he is home with caring and loving parents. He often retires to a crate where he can feel secure and let his guard down.

Henry is a very smart and handsome young man. The house training is a work in progress, but he is doing well in that department. When he arrived, he was big on counter surfing, but has learned that it is not acceptable behavior. Despite being a young guy, he does not chew on inappropriate items. He will dig in the garden some if the soil is soft, and sometime will join his foster siblings in barking at the bunnies, squirrels or people passing the house. Other times, he just watches them go, but he always perks up when the other dogs bark. He would definitely benefit from obedience training, and a professional course would offer bonding time and a chance for him to socialize. We have not yet started any training, but that is in the plan for the next few weeks. Henry would probably learn very quickly and it would help him to fit into the family. He walks well on a leash, and would enjoy walks with his folks as well as loping around the back yard. Simply stated, Henry is a good dog and companion.

We believe that Henry’s ideal home is a single dog abode with active and loving parents. If you fit the bill, please come by to meet Henry.

Success Story:   Henry is thriving in his new home! As expected, he was pretty ill at ease for the first couple of days, but he has made amazing progress and his real "puppy playful" personality is now emerging. He loves to go out on walks, and he is being walked 3 times a day so far. He seems very easy- going when meeting neighbors and their dogs, and he loves to see all the squirrels, bunnies, and other critters in the neighborhood. (Yes, we are holding tightly to his leash!) I took him to our vet last Thursday for his first check and the doctor was pretty sure that he's likely "barely 2 years old" based on his exam. Henry got his 2nd lepto shot, canine lyme #1 and canine influenza #1; he said he looks very healthy, and other than the ear infection, which he is being treated for, he's in great shape. Henry sleeps well in his crate in our bedroom, and howls only briefly when we leave the room. He loves watching basketball on TV and runs up and down the stairs many times a day--most every time we do. He's still got some separation anxiety issues, but he is getting noticeably more comfortable with each new day. In short, we are in love with Henry already and we are so thankful to you folks and Beagle Rescue for your great work and care with this wonderful pooch. Our daughter Allison can't wait to get home from Thailand in early May to hug and care for this wonderful addition to our family.

We think Henry is a fantastic match for all of us.
