Name:   Caden McDonnell

Description:   ~ 20 lbs ~ 3 yrs old ~ Needs a foster home ~

Stunned after being hit by a car and LEFT BEHIND, Caden was very LUCKY that a nice lady came along, saw to his medical needs, and is giving him a place to stay for a few days. Amazingly, he suffered no serious damage or broken bones – just lung contusions expected to heal completely on their own. He has also been diagnosed with Heartworm disease, so he won't be available for adoption during treatment.

Caden is a smaller beagle (15-20lbs), between 1-3yrs old. He is crate trained, doggy door trained and only had one accident in the house when we first got him. He does well when loose in the house, however when we're gone at work or for long periods of time we'll either crate him or let him have free reign in the "dog room" - We turned our mudroom into a dog room.

He has been great with every dog that he's met thus far, male/female, small/large, however I've monitored his meetings and have only used "bombproof" dogs or ones that I know well. The doggy park will be attempted at some point in the future. Hyper dogs do overwhelm him, however he hasn't acted out aggressively, he trys to retreat. He is very much a passive, low man on the totem pole, type of guy. He's also great with cats, goats, horses and pigs.

Caden has done well with my 6yr old daughter, however I would recommend that he be placed in a home with older kids. My daughter has grown up with dogs, was taught the dos/don'ts, has been around many rescue/timid dogs and is naturally a quiet kid. I'm afraid that young kids that have not been raised this way would be too much for him as loud noises, fast movements, etc from kids or people he doesn't know still scare him. We are still working on desensitizing him with different environments and noises and although he is making progress, it's a slow process. He's most attached to my daughter and myself, however he will approach my husband and a male family friend and allow them to pet him, walk him, etc.

He has not shown any aggression or resource guarding with food, toys, people, etc. I do feed all of my dogs separately though to avoid any problems. He's a great eater, however getting weight on him has been a struggle. More than likely because he easily stresses (thanks to his past) and the heartworm.

He walks great on a leash, does not get car sick, is picky about treats and isn't much of a toy player. He is not destructive with bedding or household items (thus far). He is a major lover/cuddler and playful, however he only shows his playful and spunky side with those he trusts most.

Success Story:   Caden joined our household on March 12, 2016. He arrived as a timid, shy little guy who was fearful of loud noises and quick moves. That is understandable since he appeared to be about 18 months old and had been through a lot in the previous 4 months. The resident beagle, Mocha, welcomed him as a brother and playmate right off the bat. Mocha’s gentle and relaxed demeanor, coupled with our quiet household and neighborhood, began the transformation. Within a month, Caden had stopped worrying about every little noise and move, and was playing joyfully with Mocha, who was taking the lead on the play. Now, after a few months more, Caden also instigates the intense “Circus” playtime, which involves acrobatics and wild chases through the house. Caden has made himself at home.

Caden also revealed a roguish side to his personality. He delighted in stealing shoes, socks, slippers, and anything else he could steal. We seldom saw the theft, even if we were in the room, he was that sneaky. He chewed on the item very little, but seemed to want to just see how many things he could accumulate in the living room. That desire has diminished, as he is growing up, but he still managed to steal food scraps off plates if we leave them unattended for a short time. He is quite a snuggler, and sleeps with someone most of the time. If you sit down, you have Caden in your lap. He has blossomed into a dear sweet little guy loaded with personality.
