Name:   Meme George

Description:   ~ 7-8 yrs old ~ 23 lbs ~ Fostered in Kensington, MD ~

Meme is a very sweet and loving girl. She craves attention and will gladly sit on your lap for extended periods of time (hoping to get a belly rub). She is very smart and social. She loves to be with her foster siblings and is energetic enough to play with the younger set. She does not however, care to share her food with her brothers and sister, and is not afraid to tell them so. True to her beagle nature, Meme is both food oriented and eager to please. These two characteristics make it easy to train Meme. She is crate trained, uses a dog door, sits for a treat and generally comes when called. She is mostly house trained, but can still have an accident in the house if not given the opportunity to get outside. She is past her chewing stage and generally doesn’t chew on inappropriate items. She does well on lead and enjoys her walks as a change of scenery and a chance to get out. She also enjoys exploring her yard, and shows no signs of wishing to leave. She neither tries to tunnel below or climb/jump the 4ft fence to freedom. She doesn’t bark much and usually doesn’t dig in the garden. Meme just takes things at face value and enjoys the life she has. Her expectations are probably not too high since her life before BRSM appears to be one of neglect. When she arrived in rescue she had two abdominal tumors, was positive for heartworm, had an ear infection and could hardly eat crunchy food due to bad teeth. Even though her previous owners showed her only neglect, she continued to love and trust humans. She has had abdominal surgery for the tumors which did turn out to be a low grade form of mammary cancer. The low grade of the tumors means the capacity to metastasize or spread is minimal. In addition, the margins of the tissue removed were clean which means that all the malignant tissue plus some normal tissue was taken out. This together indicates that the chance of recurrence is very low and Meme should have a long life. We also cleaned her teeth pulling the five bad ones, and treated her ear infection. We will begin heartworm treatment next week on (07Aug12) to complete her vetting. She is a much happier camper now and feels so much better. Through all of this, she remained a good sport showing affection to everyone. She even looked forward to taking her meds that came in a small doggie pill pockets.

She loves the little doggie bed in the kitchen and her pillow in our bedroom for the night time. She is glad to be indoors out of the heat and rain, but mostly is just happy to be included in the family. Meme is a good companion dog and will remain by your side through thick and thin. If you are looking for a new best friend, Meme would love to meet you.

Success Story:   To update you on Meme -- she is doing great! :-) She just went for her first vet visit yesterday, and is in good health, (with the exception of a case of whipworms, which she has medicine for). But otherwise she's in great health, is happy and was a very good girl at the vets. I think the staff there fell in love with her, just as everyone else who meets her seems to!

Meme is definitely a very content, calm and happy little beagle. She loves her bed (which she's conviently dragged closer to the heat vent!) and is content to just hang out with everyone in our living room and get lots of belly rubs and attention from everyone here (plus a few of Kate's friends who are enamored with her as well). She likes to be where we are and is doing pretty well on walks, etc.

The only "problem" we've had with her is that she has had a lot of accidents in the house. We've had a hard time adjusting to her schedule and I think she's just as confused by our schedule. We did discuss this with our vet and he gave us some great tips for training -- we tried them starting last evening and so far, so good. I think it's a matter of adjusting when we take her out to go and correlating it better with her food and sleep schedule. So it's a work in progress, and we are being as patient as possible with her as we all figure this out together. She's a smart little girl, so I think with some time she'll be just fine.

Katelyn absolutely LOVES Meme and is very, very good with her! She walks her, pets her, talks to her, and just genuinely loves having her here. She is very responsible and has been dedicated to taking care of Meme and it's sweet to see them "bonding". :-) In fact, Katelyn told me Meme was her new "BFF" (which I always thought meant "BEST friends forever", but Kate told me meant "Beagle Friend Forever")!! Too cute!!! :-)

Thanks again for keeping in touch and for all your help with Meme. I think she misses her "siblings" at your home, but luckily there are lots of friendly dogs in the neighborhood she can "hang out" with and I think she's very happy for her new human "sibling" (Katelyn), too! :-)
